Uncivilized Books ha anunciado que se suman al auge del manga con una nueva línea editorial. Llamada Mangalith, se lanzará en octubre con el shojo manga pionero Fire!, de Hideko Mizuno.
Fundada por Tom Kaczynski en 2009, Uncivilized Books es una editorial de cómics alternativos con sede en Minneapolis, que comenzó como un espacio para minicomics y panfletos de cómics alternativos antes de expandirse hacia novelas gráficas y otros formatos. Uncivilized ha publicado obras de Noah Van Sciver, MariNaomi, Gabrielle Bell y Craig Thompson. El libro más reciente de Thompson, Ginseng Roots (2025), se serializó por primera vez en Uncivilized antes de que Pantheon recogiera la versión terminada. También cuenta con una línea para niños, llamada ODOD Books.
Mangalith se formó el año pasado como una asociación entre el fundador Tom Kaczynski y Sean Michael Robinson de Living the Line (quien forma la otra mitad del dúo de manga alternativo Smudge junto a Ryan Holmberg). Descrita tanto como una línea editorial de publicación como un estudio de diseño, combina la experiencia de Robinson en el manga con la experiencia de publicación independiente de Kaczynski.
Según Kaczynski,

The kick off is Fire!,
a legendary classic heretofore unavailable in the English language. Its author, Hideko Mizuno, started out professionally as a mangaka in 1955, and became one of the first women to find success with shojo manga – emotive stories traditionally targeted at a young female demographic – in the 1960s and 1970s. It seems none of her work has seen print in English and Fire!
is a very interesting place to start – serialised between 1969 and 1971, it was the first shojo manga to feature a male protagonist and won the prestigious Shogakukan Manga Award in 1970.
Fire! será un libro de tapa blanda de 896 páginas, con un precio de venta de 49,99 dólares, y una fecha de lanzamiento prevista para el 14 de octubre. Uncivilized ofrece un descuento del 15% para los primeros cien pedidos anticipados.
Kaczynski explains this choice,
“Classic shojo manga has been almost entirely absent from the English localization wave of the last two decades — a blind spot that has left anglophone readers without access to key works that shaped the medium. Mizuno is the acknowledged forerunner of the Year 24 Group [women mangaka who shaped the modern form of shojo]. The artists —Moto Hagio, Keiko Takemiya, Riyoko Ikeda— are already familiar to all American Manga fans. Fire! is the missing ancestor: the work you need to understand later developments.”
